In which I will be keeping track (for my own benefit) of my daily progress in the identification of the ant fauna of Tiputini Biodiversity Station in Ecuador, the analysis of that data, and the pursuit of my PhD. New drugs are tested on spiders webs to determine how much deviation in the web there is to see if it is safe for humans or not. It does not harm the spider and provided vital information in drug research for mental health, so it was not 'crappy research' at all. Sorry to hear you think it was. It was amazing.
